Hindu Gods at Brazilian Carnival

PANAJI: Ganesh, Durga and Surya will form part of a carnival float that will roll through the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city on Saturday night. The float is being presented by the Escola de Samba Perola Negra of Sao Paulo, and its theme is “Guided by Surya journeying through India in quest of the sacred pearl”

According to the samba club’s website www.gresperolanegra.com.br the story is about a fictitious person who in a dream is transported to India and awakens in a lotus garden.

Ganesh, who is described in the website as “Hindu God whose blessings are invoked at the beginning of any journey”, emerges from a lotus and sends the person on a mission to find the sacred pearl — the symbol of love. First, though, the person has to meet with the Sun God Surya and seek his help in finding the exact spot.

On arriving at Surya’s temple the person is led to the temple of Durga, who the website describes as “mother of Ganesh and wife of Shiva”.
